Our History
Founded by the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society
In continuous operation since 1868, SSVMS is the oldest medical society in California and represents more than 7,500 physicians and medical students in El Dorado, Sacramento, and Yolo counties. SSVMS is a component medical society of the California Medical Association.
In 1966, SSVMS's leadership started a 501 (c) 3 organization with leftover money from the polio vaccine.

SSVMS Medical Student Scholarship Program - Established by SSVMS to support future physicians by providing scholarships to local medical students.
Sacramento Physicians Initiative to Reach out Innovate and Teach, SPIRIT - Launched to connect uninsured patients with free specialty medical care and surgery through volunteer physicians.
Community Service, Education and Research Fund, CSERF - Renamed as the charitable foundation of SSVMS to support community health and medical education.
Museum of Medical History - Opened to preserve Sacramento's medical history and educate the community about the evolution of medicine.
Substance Use Prevention And Treatment Coalition Sacramento, SPARCS - Formed to address the opioid crisis through education, prevention, collaboration, and lifesaving resources.
Future of Medicine - Launched to introduce high school students to healthcare careers through hands-on experiences and job shadowing.
Bridging Medicine - A new name and identity uniting our programs to improve community health, connect people to care, and inspire future healthcare professionals.
